I'm the founder and co-director of The Unjournal (unjournal.org), currently focused on making rigorous research more impactful and impactful research more rigorous. Previously, I conducted research at various institutions including the University of Essex and University of Exeter, working on charitable giving, social preferences, and experimental economics. My research examines how people make decisions about charitable donations and pro-social behavior, particularly in uncertain environments and with conditional commitments. A key theme has been investigating how different contexts and mechanisms affect charitable giving - for example, studying whether people give differently when asked to make conditional commitments ("if you win the lottery...") versus after knowing their income. I'm particularly interested in how social factors like reputation, anonymity and peer effects influence giving behavior. Beyond charitable giving, I've also conducted research on consumer behavior, expert reviews and their influence on demand, and various topics in behavioral economics. Through The Unjournal, I now focus on reforming academic publishing and research evaluation. We commission public journal-independent evaluation of papers, compensate evaluators, and work to make the peer review process more transparent and effective. Our goal is to help practitioners and researchers better learn from and utilize research, particularly work that informs global priorities.
